Behind the scenes of newborn photography session

When you see a picture of a newborn in a hat, sling, pod, or in a strategic position the first reaction is always “AWWWW, that is adorable!”.  What you don’t consider or even think about is what is actually going on behind the scenes. The pink baby is always so cute that it is almost impossible to imagine anything else.

Here is a small glimpse of the behind the scenes work:

I am hopping around on the sidelines trying to convince her to look at me while the photographer works her magic….

Photography session with baby

Yesterday we had a session with a newborn and I don’t think it could have gone better.  However when you see the amazing shots (they haven’t be edited yet)  you will know what it looked like to us.

Interrupting a sleeping baby is never fun especially when you have to put a hat on his head

Luckily he was a forgiving boy and went right back to sleep even after the last minute touch up.

Newborn photography session are always a crap shoot.  We have worked with babies that  did not want to be handled or asleep and then we get the babies like this little guy, perfect and adorable.  After these sessions and final photos I am reminded why I love my business.

What Small Business Saturday means to me

Small Business Saturday November 26

I am a small business owner.  I have one employee (me) that makes approximately minimum wage (on a good day) and the hours or operation are absolutely insane but I love it.

Today is Small Business Saturday, a day in which shoppers are encouraged to “keep it in the family” and buy locally or from small businesses located within the United States. A day that I believe should be repeated every day.

Now before I go any further allow me to say, I am not stepping on my soap box to berate you for participating in Black Friday or choosing to buy from large industries that import the majority of their goods. That would make me a hypocrite.  I did participate in the crazy shopping day and I always look for good deals, to an extent. I shop major stores for items that can not be reproduced independently, i.e. video games, music, movies, shoes etc.  I consciously choose gifts that are not available locally and reject items that can be handmade, regardless of the percentage off.

Items that are sold by small businesses are unique, creative, and full of personality.  No two are the same and the majority of the time, you as the customer,  have the ability to customize it to your taste.  These are options that most major retailers cannot offer or if they do there is an additional cost. Why should we pay extra for an item that can be found nearby and be better quality?

Small business owners and their product are creative, unique, affordable, and hardworking.  When you, as a consumer, buy from a small business either locally or on the web you are supporting much more than a business, you are supporting and encouraging a passion.

I want to encourage you this year, when you are mulling over that wooden plaque, cute dress, hat, picture frame, jewelry, etc., take a moment and try to find it from a small business.  I guarantee we will have one of whatever you are looking for and it will be better.
