Hanging Halloween Bats and a link up

I’m late, I know.  Don’t hate me.

Do you have a project to share?  I just did mine today and I felt the need to get it done before I began the linky party.

This project cost me two dollars.

Hanging Halloween Bats

Two six packs of Halloween Bats from Target ($1 each)

Tape

Thread – Clear would be the best but if you are like me and you don’t have any on hand, white will do
Simple Halloween Decoration for kids1. Take each bat and punch a hole in their wing with a hole puncher.

2. Tie the string in the hole

3. Tap it to the roof.

That’s it!  I currently have a black light on my front porch to make my glow in the dark bats glow.

Hanging Halloween Bats is an easy craft for kids
Super simple and the kids can help! Beware, too close to the door will prove disastrous and there may be a Bat massacre.

Do you have something to link up! Go for it.

Thursday Link Up

Thursday has arrived and it is time for Green Thumb Thursday.

Here is my most recent super simple project for pumpkins.

How to make pumpkins have a little sparkle

I wanted my pumpkins to have a little sparkle this fall season so I decided to make them sparkle rather than buying any.  I bought these small pumpkins for 2 dollars and then Mod Podged them with the Gloss variety.  I then sprinkled them GENEROUSLY with the Michaels brand of Extra Fine Glitter.  (I couldn’t justify buying Martha Stewart’s 8 dollar bottles of glitter)  After they dried I shook off all the excess glitter and they were done.  Now I have three beautiful pumpkins that I am going to use as a centerpiece.

Now it is your turn. Do you have a project, recipe, or idea that you would like to share with others.  Go ahead and link up!

The beautiful Gingerbread house that never was….Oh and a winner!

The other day I invited some good friends to come over with their boys and decorate Gingerbread houses with us.  I had wonderful visions of Christmas carols playing in the background, fresh cookies coming out of the oven, the boys playing nicely, and all our Gingerbread houses looking like something from the store.

That isn’t exactly what happened.  They boys did play nicely and cookies were coming out of the oven but the mommies were more interested in “backin our thang up” to Dance Central on the Kinect and chatting!  When we did get down to the important business of decorating the houses I came to a startling revelation. I am not a huge fan and neither are my kids.  It is sticky, gooey, and never comes out looking like the picture….

This is my masterpiece…Do you like the satanic snowman?!
This is my good friends.  Hers actually looks like it is a little cottage from the Swiss Alps.
All of them together. Wow – We are good.

Rainy day and a Light Switch

When we first had children my husband and I both agreed to make sure that our house would be kid friendly.  It will of course change as they get older but as of now we are having a lot of fun doing things that our parents never wanted.

On that note, we have made our boys room a really cool place and there isn’t anything that we won’t try.  Today I finally got my hands on their light switch faceplate!  I had so much fun doing it!  Before I show you the project I got the idea for the story book images from Life With Little Ones and the magnet board she created for her boys.

 BORING
TA- DA!
On the wall!

Here is what I did -  We had two copies of the same Dr. Seuss book so I thought I would put one to really good use… I cut out a lot of pieces and Mod Podge them to the faceplate.  I waited for them to dry and added a Mod Podge top coat!

I love it!

You bloggers have made me very crafty

The name of my blog is Becoming Homegrown because I am in the process of learning how fix, refinish, create, grow and a litany of other things that I never bothered with when I was younger.  Well, I must hand it my fellow bloggers, you have taught me to be very crafty.

I hit a GREAT garage sale this last weekend.  The woman was redecorating her house and was selling all of her antiques and French country decor.  There was some fantastic stuff and I made out very well.  I do believe that this was some of my best garage saleing (I just made that a verb-go with it) ever.  Included in the great loot were two vintage tin signs.  One is too cute and the other was not my style but I got it anyways because I knew I could something with it….Right now, I KNOW, you guys are making a mental list of things you would have done with the sign.  I will now show you what I did with the sign.

Before

Still before–Oh wait.. What is that in my hand?! My trusty chalkboard paint….
AFTER
A Closer after shot -
Now a couple of you may be having a heart attack because you really liked the sign but I have to tell you again, the image and color just does not go with my house! Seriously, in my guest/kids bathroom, I have  a very large black and white photo of a movie audience wearing 3-d glasses look terrified and guess where I have it hanging… right over the toilet!
I made that sign into a chalkboard for my kitchen! I wrote down the food schedule because my kiddos were getting out of hand asking for snacks.  Now they have a reference. I also really hate my handwriting.  It just proves I was never destined to be a teacher.
Ugh- I feel I need to go take a picture of my bathroom so that everyone doesn’t think my style is horrible… The picture is funny, I promise!!  err… I need to go take a picture now….

Quick gift and gettin’ physical

It is Bunco time again… well, actually it was Bunco time again last night!  It was actually a fun theme,  “Gettin Physical!”  Yes, we had sweatpants, yes, leg warmers were present, yes, headbands were worn, and yes ,Olivia was blasting on the stereo.  Let me tell you it was a crazy night… okay not really crazy, but a lot of fun.  I will be placing a picture of my somewhat 80s attire at the bottom of this post.  I don’t want it to be the first thing that pops up on everyone’s blogger dashboard.

I did bring a gift for the hostess of our 80s Bunco evening.   Here it is:

Before
After

This gift was really easy and inexpensive.  The pot is from Wal-mart and was 75 cents.  All I did was paint it with Chalkboard paint wait for it to dry and add a pretty blue ribbon.  The contents are all “homegrown.”  I bagged up some compost, soil and onion seeds with directions for planting.  Boom – an organic hostess gift.  Now, it does help that she was telling me that they are starting a garden so the gift was fitting. I am not sure how every hostess would react to onion seeds and dirt. However- I will be repeating this gift for our May Day gifts.

Alrighty – Now for the money shot -  This is not very good picture!  I took them after the fact and I did not include my face because the hair went down and the green eyeshadow had lost its luster… Also the bathroom mirror has water spots from two boys brushing their teeth with daddy last night!
Now the goal was Flashdance type of effect.  Both those shirts are my husbands.  I cut up his t-shirt and took his tank top to master the effect.   Not the best picture but let me tell you I look RAD.
