How to make a Creeper

Minecraft, it’s a game and an addiction.

We are big fans of the game and today I found myself with a lot of boxes, green craft paint and a brilliant idea. It ties into my summer activity box

We made ourselves a Creeper and good news YOU can too..

1. Go to your local grocery store and ask the produce department for some boxes. They will be free

2. Find a green paint that will be suitable and start working on your new friend.  We mixed a leaf green with army green

3. After everything is dry stack them on top of each other and draw the sad face.  I think he is just lonely and has anger issues (They blow things up in the game)

Ta Da!  A Minecraft Creeper is in your home. It took us about an hour from start to finish.

However….

He came to life after his face and we put him outside

He promised to play nice and now he is following me everywhere I go.

Easy and inexpensive fun. Let’s see if we can scare the crap out of my husband by hiding this guy in the dark bathroom.

Box of activities

I am not a crafty person by nature.  I cannot walk into a dollar store and see a treasure trove of supplies that can produce endless hours of fun for my children or potential home decor options.  That is why there are bloggers that ARE crafty and teach me how to think outside the box

I recently found All for the Boys on Pinterest and I was thrown into a world of ideas and it was through her site that I was inspired!  Our summer last year was painfully long and boring so I decided that this year was going to be different; crafty if you will. (I also don’t have a ton of cash laying around to enroll my kids in a million different summer programs  so this a helpful alternative)

I have started out small.  A simple box of supplies for a few ideas.

Contents:

Clothes pins (1.88 for 100 at Wal-mart)

Paintbrushes (had on hand)

Masking Tape (1.00 at the dollar store)

Shower curtain rings (1.00 at the dollar store)

Glue stick (came in a pack of the 3 – 1.00 at the dollar store)

Balloons (1.00 at the dollar store)

Vinyl Shower curtain (1.00 at the dollar store)

Playing cards (came in a pack of 2 at the dollar store; 1.00)

Puzzle (1.00 at the dollar store- I bought 2)

Plastic container  (.96 cents at Wal-mart)

So for approximately 12 dollars I have the beginnings of a box activities for the boys.  If you have scanned the list you may ask what is the point of the shower curtain and rings.  Over at All for the Boys she hosts Fort Friday. I figured, since the the curtain and rings cost a whopping 2 dollars I will allow the boys to color on the curtain and we will figure out a way to hang it for a fort.  I am also having my husband pick up produce boxes at the grocery store for the boys to build a fort.  I am going to post the results on Friday!

I don’t expect this box to stay this small.  It will (hopefully) grow over time. As I have been writing this post my four year old has already raided it….

This box thing just may work.

Glow in the dark Easter Eggs

Glow in the dark Easter eggs for a night time Egg hunt
Easter festivities usually have a familiar rhythm to them. Church, Egg hunt, Easter baskets, and lots of food.  At least this is what I have seen and heard.  We have not been able to get an Easter rhythm down in the last eight years. I am not good at planning them and we don’t do the whole Easter bunny thing.

This Easter I decided to actually attempt something new and change our habit of doing absolutely nothing.

A glow in the dark Easter egg hunt.  I got the idea off  Pinterest but I have had so many people asking how I did it I am going to post the directions here.

Glow in the Dark Easter Eggs

Purchase the bigger selection of plastic Easter Eggs.  I found mine at Walmart for 50 cents a piece. (6 in a bag and I bought 4)

Find the glow bracelets – You can usually find these in the Dollar section at Target or at the Dollar Tree

Scotch Tape

When you are almost ready to begin your hunt break the bracelets to get the glow.  Bend them enough to fit in the egg and then tape the crack to ensure they don’t pop open.

Then hide them!

Your kiddos will love them and instead of getting a ton of candy they will get the glow bracelets instead!

Happy Hunting!

Great meals for the family and the wallet

When I cook I sometimes get stuck in a rut.  My husband is a creature of habit and would happily eat the same three meals over and over again.  I am completely the opposite and even though I find comfort in the regular fair, I like to change it up and find new and tasty meals for the family.

I have recently stumbled across a few meals that are not only huge crowd pleasers but easy on the wallet.

Braided Spaghetti Bread

Braided Spaghetti Bread

Do not be intimidated by its title or picture! This meal is super easy to make and when you post your photo on Facebook about what is for dinner, everyone will be impressed with your skills.  Plus, you probably have all the ingredients on hand.

Broccoli and Cheese Stuffed Chicken

Broccoli and Cheese Stuffed Chicken

This is an unbelievably delicious meal that is actually low in fat and calories. My kids inhaled this and were asking for seconds.  The only ingredient that you may not have on hand are Panko crumbs.  They are not expensive and you can pick them up at almost every grocery store and they are a useful thing to always have on hand.

French Dip in a Crock Pot

(I forgot to take a picture)  This meal was a huge hit with my family.  The only thing I would change is the amount of soy sauce.  A friend replaced half of the soy sauce with a beef broth and still had great results!  One of the best features of this meal is CROCK POT.  Put the roast in and walk away.

There are three easy and fairly inexpensive meals that you can add to your meal rotation.  I found all of these on Pinterest and if you need any more ideas or want to share jump on and start following me!

Taking notes and illegal pictures

This last weekend my family and I took a little trip out to our local IKEA.  Let me just confess to you right now I LOVE IKEA!  It is so much fun!  This trip was particularly fun because we just moved and even though we were only getting a bookshelf I was taking notes for future purchases.

Here is one of my dream kitchens….Yes, one…..

Another angle….

My future herb/spice jars.  Excuse the blurryness of these pictures.  Some other lady was crowding me and *sighing* the whole time.  Sheesh – Couldn’t she see I was trying to take some illegal pictures?!

They even had a fish market!!!

Ah look at my children pretending to cook.  Maybe they were trying to make food that is actually edible and not what I usually concoct.

They were even all dressed up for Christmas!

Now, I am not sure if taking pictures is illegal in Ikea but I did get some major frowny faces.  One older Ikea sales representative made a B-line for me and my camera so I took the picture and ran.  Literally.  My husband was embarrassed and my children waved at the lady!    Oh well, I got the pictures Ikea Gestapo lady, MWAH HA!

DON’T FORGET – My Giveaway is still going on!!! Check it out

Can I pack any more into the schedule?!

Are you like me?  Do you procrastinate? Do you pack as much stuff you can into a small amount of time and then collapse in a heap of exhaustion?  If you said yes to these questions, then GREAT, you are in good company.  If not, then you can laugh at me.  Keep track of the insanity!

As you all know, we are moving.  We are moving NEXT Wednesday.  Soon after I posted about our home, I went on an extreme search for a rental.  It is Christmas, I want to decorate and I want to do that in a home that is not filled with boxes.   Well, I found a home and within three days we signed the lease and scheduled a move in day.  Yup, I am that good….Actually, God is that good.  He gave us an AWESOME place.  Seriously, it’s amazing. I will post pictures as soon as we are in.

I am co-hospitality for our Mops group and because my partner in crime did an fantastic job on a busy meeting earlier in the year I took over decoration for the Christmas meeting.  I had to come up with a couple of ideas of decor…Check out the inspiration…

Cranberry centerpieces are beautiful, simple and perfect.

Now – Please note that this needs to be prepared by Tuesday of this upcoming week.  I am leaning towards a combo of all three….However the first photo will take more time that I have available.

Finally, I have a waiting list for hats! I still am working on hats from a hugely successful boutique in November.  I believe I have about 10 more to finish!  My goal is to have them done in the next week and a half!

The question I have for you is, Do you work well under pressure?  Because for some reason, I do.

My shaddy neighbors

This is an image from The Burbs not my neighborhood… I don’t stand out front in a bad bikini, well not all the time.

I am living the movie The Burbs.  No joke. Okay, well a little of a joke, but I will tell you why.

We moved into our quaint little house (quaint is a nice way of saying small) about three years ago.  Yes, the same quaint house that is causing such a hassle with Chase.  Anyways, our neighborhood was new and there were a lot of families just like ours moving in.  It was nice.  Well, in recent months some of the new families moving in are a little scary.  My neighbors are the case in point.

WE NEVER SEE THEM.  We know they bought the house and we know they moved in.  We saw the truck, we saw the stuff, we saw THEM.  I was a little excited about the prospect of a family moving in next door instead of the two older women that used to occupy the house.  And if I didn’t know better something shady went down with that mother/daughter combo, they just disappeared one day too. It’s odd. It’s creepy.

What is going on in that house?! They never use lights. I mean never.  The driveway lights are always on but the lights in the house never seemed to be used.  Now please don’t think I am peeking out my windows constantly because I am not. I have a backyard that gives me a clear view of their home so spying is easy…  I’m KIDDING…sort-of…*cough cough*

I occasionally here the garage door open and the rolling of the garbage can out but I never see anything else.  And here is the kicker… They STOLE our trashcan and replaced it with theirs! Are you kidding?  Now we have this disgusting trash can that is so much worse than ours.  The outside is covered in gross crusty junk. Oh and if you are wondering how we know that they stole it. Our trashcan has two visable marks on it. One from me running into it in the garage, yes I did that, and a “art” from my once three year old son.

Shaddy things are happening out here…..I really hope they don’t read my blog.

Is there something that you just can’t stand?

Is there something that your husband has brought home or has owned that you are not too fond of?  Maybe it is something that really grates on your nerves of perhaps it is easily looked over but it isn’t something you would have thought of as decoration…..

When my husband and I got married over six years ago he had two “decoration” pieces that I hated!  I mean loathed from the very depth of my being.  The first was a cityscape that was made out of metal and it hung on the wall.  It was heavy and ugly.  It reminded me of one of those tacky pieces that Joey, from Friends, decorated his apartment with.  My husband of course loved it and thought it was very “metro-sexual.”….Yes, you read that right.  The other items (plural) that I couldn’t handle were the swords/daggers.  I don’t know when men, in today’s society, thought that swords from the local Renaissance fair would make handsome art pieces but it needs to stop.  ESPECIALLY when there is NOTHING else in the home that even resembles a Renaissance theme. (Just a little tip from me to you…They aren’t even historically accurate!  AAAAHHHH! Come on!)

UGH, I really hated these things. I still do.  Maybe it is my background in Art History or simple good taste but those two bits of decor quickly were taken down and stored under the bed, never to be heard of again.

I bring this up because my husband frequently brings displays home for my kids and the play room.  I typically don’t have a problem with it because the boys love it and it is never a permanent addition.  Well, we are now the proud owners of four Iron Man cutouts…FOUR.  I don’t think all four are intended for the five and three year old….One is currently in my kitchen for some reason….

In good sport, I did not band the cutouts. In fact, I hung two of them up in the boys room. That’s right, I’m an awesome mom.

They love them and my husband thinks it looks pretty cool. I, however, will nod and smile, give them all kisses, and silently count the days until they go and live in the trash….

Inspiration found at Goodwill and a homemade magnet board – Ta-Da!

Thank you everyone so much for the advice that was given in the previous post!  I read each one and took notes… I went to Goodwill, my second time EVER, and found tea cups and inspiration.  Imagine that Inspiration found at Goodwill and it was half off.
I have decided to ditch the tea cup idea.  Sorry, there are approximately 70 women, and I have a teeny tiny budget.  But don’t loose hope or the willingness to keep reading… I found a glass milk carafe and some metal tins (aka – inspiration)

Our Tea is going Southern.  Paula Deen, Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Fried Green Tomatoes southern.  I am using tins, mason jars, candles, moss, and fresh flowers… Are you intrigued?  I will take pictures of a mock set up just because I love you.

Alright – Would you like to see what I made today -

This is my boys new magnet board.  That is a cookie sheet that has been spray painted red with story book pages mod podge on the back.  I tried to strategically place a magnet in the middle but it blends in too well…

Cheapo Crapo Camera and I took another picture but it didn’t come out well.

I will be hanging this in their room tomorrow!

This newspaper globe has turned out to be my biggest pain.  I am making a pinata for my son’s birthday party and I am trying to make the Earth so I can attach Superman to the side…Get it?…Superman is flying around the Earth…

This is the second layer and tomorrow I have to do a third and possibly a fourth.  This project is not as “fun” as I had envisioned.  I will post all the gory details as soon as I have a final product to show you.
