The Debit Diet

Two things that are typically off limits for conversation are Religion and Politics.  I believe there are two more things that are off the table for discussion, money and (for women) your weight.   Since I have already broken two of the four “what not to talk about rules” I have decided to add one more to the list….Money.

Earlier in the year I announced that there were two goals for 2011, losing weight and becoming debit free. As most of you already know I documented my weight loss, in detail,  and as of this morning I am 139, two lbs up but still good!  Today I will start documenting our debit diet.

A little background:
My husband and I never learned how to save.  He started working in high school and gradually began to make good money for a young single man.  He was taught at that time that he needed to have credit and was taken out to multiple stores to open credit cards and add balances to them. He typically always payed them off but as he got older and then married the “wants” became more pricey and his good credit gave him high balances.
As for me, I came from a different background than my husband.  I was given an American Express card at 15!!! Are you kidding me!!!   Imagine the movie Clueless, except without the mansion and the (at the time) good wardrobe.   I was just that, CLUELESS!

After we had been married for awhile we figured out that debt was really not the way to live and started to “try” to get rid of it.  It was not until about a year ago that we actually learned how to go about saving and getting rid of debt.  Good friends of ours sponsored us to take the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace class. What an amazing blessing!

Within months we had an emergency fund established and we began to pay off debt. We payed off all the little bills, medical and tiny balances on credit cards, and began to attack the big dogs of debt.  We had a big credit card balance and two loans.

I am here today to tell you that we have paid off the credit card!  Now for the details.  The credit card balance was 4478.00 and after some prayer time I called Visa and told them I was prepared to lay down cash if they would settle for a balance lower than what we owed.  They did it!!!  They knocked of 600!  3800 dollars later we have NO MORE CREDIT CARDS!

Now we have to more biggies to attack:
Loan 1 and Loan 2.

I would like to tell you the exact balances and what each loan is for but this is the internet and I don’t need that info out there.  I will give you the exact amounts after they are paid in full.  So here is a rough estimate of the loans together -  Less than 12.

We need to conquer them before this time next year!  Will we succeed?  You better believe it!

If you have any questions or tips for us – Feel free to comment!

Resolutions??! Do you do them?

Do you do resolutions?  If you do, what typically do they focus on?  Personally speaking I am not big on resolutions. In the past, when I had the go forth and do it attitude, my resolutions were strong in January/February, began to sputter around March and came to a screeching hault in May.  It happened every year and so I decided one year that my resolution would be to NOT make anymore.  I kept that one…easily.

Well, I am breaking the rules this year.  I am making two new resolutions and I am going to blog about it and maybe someone here will keep me accountable.

Resolution Number 1:
I am going on a diet.  Starting January 3.  The goal is a between 15-20lbs. I have a plan and I will be blogging about it in great detail.  During this time I will ask for no hatters… Please be nice or I will hunt you down and force feed you cookies.
Resolution Number 2:
Get out of Debit.  We are a Dave Ramsey Financial Peace practicing family.  We have been doing the cash only budget since about May and have not touched the credit card at all.  My husband and I have crunched the numbers and we can do it! I will also be blogging about this probably monthly.

I am excited.  However, I do believe that I will not be in the best of spirits after the third…
Anyways – What are your resolutions?! Seriously, I actually want to know.  Are you going to blog about them?  If you are will you attach the link so I can see?

Reasons to have a junker car

I own a junker car.  It isn’t horrible or a death trap for my kids but it is defiantly a junker.  When we first bought it over a year ago I was actually a little embarrassed to drive it and my husband is STILL embarrassed. However, embarrassment or not, I now believe that having a junker car is a great idea for families getting out of debt plus you have the added bonus of being able to name it.
Old junker cars always deserve a name, and ours is THE PIMP MOBILE.  My husband refuses to use this name and calls it by its’ birth name, the Volvo.

Here are my reasons why to own a junker:  (below this list I am going to list all the problems with my car!)
-No car payments.  We bought the Pimp Mobile in cash
-We don’t have to refill the tank frequently because it is a local only driver (no freeways allowed)
-We don’t care about how great it looks – No rims for him!
-You get to name it

Here is what is wrong with the Pimp Mobile.
-The sun roof is broken.  We opened it and it only made 2/3 of the way back up.  It sucks during the heat and it is amusing if driven during the rain….UNLESS your husband took the good car and you were forced to take the PIMP Mobile to the store and had a rain soaked shirt upon arrival.
-The AC is intermittent.  It typically blows cold but sometimes it goes lukewarm
-When the drivers side door is open is does an extremely loud CREAK.  Always a treat at the gas station.
-The tinting is not really tinted anymore…it also has bubbles
-Windshield wipers – Yup, those are a no go. However please remember we live in the desert so rain isn’t too frequent
-One thing that DOES work- The butt seat warmers in the driver and passenger seats.  Nothing like a hot butt to keep you warm in the winter

The moral of the story, Junker cars can be good investments if you are working on your debt or saving up for something better.

OH, if you are ever in Arizona and see a man trying cover half his face in an old black Volvo, give him a little wave, it’s probably my husband!

Spring Tea with a Southern Twist

Take a deep breath… AH

I did it. I made it through the Spring Tea for my MOPS group.  I mentioned in a previous post that I was in charge of coming up with a theme for Tea and finding the decorations for that theme.

My idea was Southern Style.  Mason jars, glass carafes, ice tea, southern food, wild flowers, candles… do you see where I am going here?

After weeks of searching thrift stores, online websites and countless trips to Michaels and Joanns my room came together and it was beautiful.  I took some pictures of the centerpieces on two different tables but I will have to grab some pictures from my friends.

Picture Below:
Each table had a glass pitcher or carafe of ice tea, either a metal pale OR a large mason jar, wild flowers, moss.  Every place setting had a mason jar for the tea…  Oh yeah, Do you see the candle?  The itty bitty candle holder? I had to shave tea candles to get them in there.

Different table

The refreshment table.  I really wish I took the time to take a better picture.  At our meetings we typically have two table set up for food however this meeting we had to have four.  Three were dedicated solely to food and this table had drinks.  We had Arnold Palmers,  Pink lemonade, coffee, Hot Tea and fresh slices of orange, lemon and mint leaves.  It was crazy!

The leaves in the front were from a friends orange tree. She cut off branches for me so that I could add a little green to our tables!

I loved the results and I am happy it is all over now. I am tired.

Now – if you are a mother of a preschooler and don’t know what MOPS is, I would really like to encourage you to take a look.   click  MOPS   Enter in your zip code and find a group near you.  This is an awesome ministry and it is aimed at supporting YOU.  If you would like more info go to the website or email me!

I am going to go nap now…

P.S.  Almost everything I used had to be bought or borrowed.  In my thrifty endeavors I barely spent over 80 dollars!

A little tip from me to you

There is a point when a person can become too frugal.  I hit that point this week.

A couple of months ago I went to see my oral surgeon to discuss the extraction of my last two wisdom teeth.  They had really started to bother me and it was time to get something done about it… At least that was what I was thinking at the time.   After the consult they informed me the procedure would cost about 400 dollars. (I am rounding up) I looked around and found the financing through Care Credit and was all ready to go in for the surgery.  Well my teeth started to feel a little better and I decided to put it off, and off, and off some more. Until two days ago.

In the middle of Monday afternoon my wisdom teeth starting throbing.  I am talking huge amounts of pain.  I took some medicine and nothing worked. I went to Wal-mart at 11:30pm (that is also the time the really crazy people go shopping at wal-mart) and got two bottles of orajel (is that the correct spelling) in order to numb my tooth.  I made it through the night and called my Oral Surgeon the next morning.   I scheduled my appointment for Thursday at 10:30am.

Well today things got worse. The medication to kill the pain was no longer killing the pain and instead it was upsetting my stomach.  So imagine a severe toothache and a horrible stomach ache and multiple it by ten, that was me.   My husband stepped in and called the surgeon and got me an emergency appointment.   Now I am typing in relief but I can’t believe I let it get that far!

I didn’t want to pay the 400 dollars until after we got our tax return! I was going to try to hold out until February!!! CRAZY right here ladies and gentlemen.

So my tip for you is don’t wait until you are on the brink, just get it done.
