Weddings, Homemade gifts, and Tornados – Oh MY!

Before we begin let me ask you all one question – What is up with the weather?  A better question would probably be what is up with the Earth?

I live in Arizona and right now, as I type this, we are under a Tornado watch!  It has rained for two days straight and now the real force of the storm is hitting us… Don’t get me wrong, the rain is great but the wind is freaking me out a little.

OK- So admist all of this adversity there is a little brightness shinning through. One of my best friends is getting married tomorrow… Everyone together…Congratulations April!   Honestly it is about time – they are going on eight years.   ANYWAYS – she came over today to borrow my wonderful, trusty, never fail, chalkboard paint for her guest gifts.  Are they called guest gifts?  She had a great idea and I asked her permission to blog about it.  So I am and here we go…

April was inspired by one of MY ideas, the chalkboard pot.  She did put her own spin on it though.

So plain pots with a square of chalkboard paint… She squared it off with painters tape
Finished product.  There are some metallic gold paint embellishments on the side.  The flower stencil did not come out too well but she made it work.
She plans on writing the names of the people that are recieving these on the square.  I get one too…
Good idea huh?! Go ahead and steal it if you want, I give you permission, however April may beat you down.

You bloggers have made me very crafty

The name of my blog is Becoming Homegrown because I am in the process of learning how fix, refinish, create, grow and a litany of other things that I never bothered with when I was younger.  Well, I must hand it my fellow bloggers, you have taught me to be very crafty.

I hit a GREAT garage sale this last weekend.  The woman was redecorating her house and was selling all of her antiques and French country decor.  There was some fantastic stuff and I made out very well.  I do believe that this was some of my best garage saleing (I just made that a verb-go with it) ever.  Included in the great loot were two vintage tin signs.  One is too cute and the other was not my style but I got it anyways because I knew I could something with it….Right now, I KNOW, you guys are making a mental list of things you would have done with the sign.  I will now show you what I did with the sign.

Before

Still before–Oh wait.. What is that in my hand?! My trusty chalkboard paint….
AFTER
A Closer after shot -
Now a couple of you may be having a heart attack because you really liked the sign but I have to tell you again, the image and color just does not go with my house! Seriously, in my guest/kids bathroom, I have  a very large black and white photo of a movie audience wearing 3-d glasses look terrified and guess where I have it hanging… right over the toilet!
I made that sign into a chalkboard for my kitchen! I wrote down the food schedule because my kiddos were getting out of hand asking for snacks.  Now they have a reference. I also really hate my handwriting.  It just proves I was never destined to be a teacher.
Ugh- I feel I need to go take a picture of my bathroom so that everyone doesn’t think my style is horrible… The picture is funny, I promise!!  err… I need to go take a picture now….

Quick gift and gettin’ physical

It is Bunco time again… well, actually it was Bunco time again last night!  It was actually a fun theme,  “Gettin Physical!”  Yes, we had sweatpants, yes, leg warmers were present, yes, headbands were worn, and yes ,Olivia was blasting on the stereo.  Let me tell you it was a crazy night… okay not really crazy, but a lot of fun.  I will be placing a picture of my somewhat 80s attire at the bottom of this post.  I don’t want it to be the first thing that pops up on everyone’s blogger dashboard.

I did bring a gift for the hostess of our 80s Bunco evening.   Here it is:

Before
After

This gift was really easy and inexpensive.  The pot is from Wal-mart and was 75 cents.  All I did was paint it with Chalkboard paint wait for it to dry and add a pretty blue ribbon.  The contents are all “homegrown.”  I bagged up some compost, soil and onion seeds with directions for planting.  Boom – an organic hostess gift.  Now, it does help that she was telling me that they are starting a garden so the gift was fitting. I am not sure how every hostess would react to onion seeds and dirt. However- I will be repeating this gift for our May Day gifts.

Alrighty – Now for the money shot -  This is not very good picture!  I took them after the fact and I did not include my face because the hair went down and the green eyeshadow had lost its luster… Also the bathroom mirror has water spots from two boys brushing their teeth with daddy last night!
Now the goal was Flashdance type of effect.  Both those shirts are my husbands.  I cut up his t-shirt and took his tank top to master the effect.   Not the best picture but let me tell you I look RAD.

Homemade Glass Ornaments

Fooled you huh?! You thought I MADE glass…. don’t lie, I know you did.  ANYWAYS, here is a fun, fast, simple, and pretty fantastic looking craft.

Supplies needed:
Glass ornaments from Michaels – This box of six cost 2.50
Craft paint

All you need to do is squirt some craft paint in and let the kiddos swirl it around.  My eldest son made one that looks a lot like the planet Earth.  How very “green” of him.

Ornaments – 2.50  Craft paint – approximately .33 each   Finally having a holiday gift that my mother in law will enjoy – PRICELESS.
